Sinus Surgeons brings together Professor Darlene Lubbe and Dr Nicholas Goncalves, both specialist ENT surgeons consulting at Mediclinic Cape Town.
Both specialists have expertise in rhinology, endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery, alongside their individual areas of subspecialist interest. Each practice manages its own appointments and patient administration.
Professor Darlene Lubbe
Professor Darlene Lubbe is an otorhinolaryngologist specialising in advanced endoscopic sinus, skull base and transorbital surgery. She is Head of the Rhinology Unit at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital and has played a pioneering role in introducing and developing advanced endoscopic surgical techniques in South Africa.
She is actively involved in international surgical education and training, including the development of endoscopic skull base and transorbital surgical training programmes.
Appointments with Professor Lubbe require a referral from a medical specialist or general practitioner (GP) with an appropriate clinical indication. Direct patient self-referrals are not accepted.

Dr Nicholas Goncalves
Dr Nicholas Goncalves is an otorhinolaryngologist providing specialist ear, nose and throat care for adults and children. His practice encompasses general ENT conditions, with particular expertise in rhinology, endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery, airway disorders and paediatric ENT conditions.
He completed a fellowship in Rhinology, Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery at the University of Cape Town under the supervision of Professor Darlene Lubbe. His additional clinical interests include pituitary surgery, cystic fibrosis, hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) and transorbital endoscopic surgery.
Patients may request an appointment with Dr Goncalves directly, without a referral letter.

Endoscopic Sinus & Skull Base Surgery
Endoscopic surgery provides minimally invasive approaches to a range of complex conditions affecting the nose, paranasal sinuses and skull base. These include chronic sinus disease, benign and malignant tumours, pituitary lesions and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks. Where appropriate, these techniques allow access through the nasal passages, avoiding external incisions.
Transorbital Endoscopic Surgery
Transorbital endoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique that uses small incisions around the eye to access selected areas of the orbit and skull base. It may be used to treat certain tumours and other complex conditions, sometimes in combination with endoscopic endonasal surgery. The suitability of this approach depends on the location and nature of the condition.
Paediatric Nasal & Sinus Care
Children may experience a range of nasal and sinus conditions, including persistent nasal obstruction, recurrent or chronic sinusitis, and enlarged adenoids. Assessment and treatment are tailored to the child’s age, symptoms and individual needs, with surgery considered when appropriate.
